Empress & Her Spectacle: A Muse to Amuse
Remember in Greek mythology how Zeus had nine daughters, the muses. If you ever watched the Hercules adaption by Disney, you might remember them as the gospel singing narrators. If you don’t know about them, let me tell you a little bit about them. Zeus, the Greek mythology playboy, slept around a lot, and sometimes not as a human, but I’m not kink shaming the god of lightning for his proactive sex life. From his intimate experience with Mnemosyne, the Titan goddess of memory, the nine muses of art, literature, and science came into being. He really gets around not the town but the universe in Greek lore. I read through old myths and think, "is no one safe?".
I'll introduce you to the nine muses, cause who doesn't want Greek lore?
1. Calliope - Epic Poetry
2. Clio - History
3. Erato - Lyric Poetry
4. Euterpe - Song and Elegiac Poetry
5. Melpomene - Tragedy
6. Polyhymnia - Hymns
7. Terpsichore - Dance
8. Thalia - Comedy
9. Urania - Astronomy
Creating a Muse:
As a working woman still dreaming about returning to school and getting my doctrinal, I find I lose faith in the power of my ambitions when I experience the mundane of the 8-5 so heavily. I miss the challenges of academia and the space to dream and create freely. As a sad result often I find that I need to acquire my muses. So I seek out little sparks of inspirations within myself that will keep going and creating. I call them my muses. They might not be the gospel sounding muses from the Disney adaption of Hercules or nearly as fanciful. I’m also certainly not trying to summon the nine daughters of Zeus because I’m sure they need a break too. Can you imagine the hassle of being on beck and call for every Tom and Jerry who practiced poetry in ancient times? To counter the draining repetitive of my mundane 8-5, I seek solace in my personal characters. My personas, or merely put my inner muses and guides.
I’m excited cause I get to see them come to life soon in digital art, but in the meantime let me tell you about essentially being your own muse. It’s not gospel choir fun. I wish it were. However, what I can say is it’s a worthy endeavor in setting yourself up to succeed even in sticky situations. I’m currently overworked and undervalued in my current place of work. It hurts, it cuts me to pieces, but I have my inner muses to thank for reminding me to stick to my kawaii business and see myself through the day. In my mind, I can be the character I need to get through the muck. I can momentarily channel that creative energy and present myself in the way I need to succeed. Is it roleplay? Is it a psychological break? Find out next time my twitter blows up. Regardless, my muses are the voices that makeup me. It helps me express, process, and well create as much as I do.
If you want to create your own muse, start visualizing what your mind would like…think like a map of the perceived self. Then question who inhabits this map? What memories and experiences shaped you differently or inspiring a change in you? This is an intimate activity and requires a lot of introspection, so grab a glass of your favorite drink and think about what makes you inspired, and create your own muse.

My featured look, and inspiration to write about muses, which I might write on again later cause its fun, is a recent fashion collaboration with a new graphics Tee shop “Kiki Collection.” I was pretty ecstatic to see the shirt “I am my own muse” because it’s a sentiment I invest heavily in for myself and Jadedisland. I styled the shirt with a blazer and pink pants, to give a kawaii business look. The shirt is really soft, and shipping was standard. I recommend giving them a peek and checking out their Instagram for some of their featured models of color who are gorgeous. It’s a shop with Black Girl Magic I can get behind. They got 5 out of 5 Leo stars from me.
