Building an Aesthetic ~ Jadedisland Style
Crafting an aesthetic takes a little bit of soul, interest, and faith. First, bump the mentality that you can't represent an aesthetic well. Aesthetic in my humble opinion isn't as categorical as it is presented on Instagram, Tumblr, or other fashion lifestyle sites. I rebrand aesthetic in my own way. Things like Kawaii, pastel, goth, vintage, or even preppy are simply fashion lifestyles people commit to. Anyone can do any of them or multiple at once. Aesthetic is all about presentation of your self, you are presenting a side of you as a dream made into reality. When you step out into the world you will be representing the dream you made a reality. I choose to label mine “magical girl”, “Pink energy” as minor subcategories but overall my aesthetic is JADEDISLAND. I present my dream not only visually but as a mentality and a platform for my voice and creativity. I am the fusion of fashion, writing, poetry, & emotional energy. I refuse to shy away from perceived normalcy or eurocentric limitations. Crafting Jadedisland and sharing it is a big part of who I am as a writer and muse. Recently someone approached me for advice on building aesthetic and hours later this post was produced.
To begin aesthetic thinking or crafting, start with thinking about what encompasses you as a whole. What symbolizes the unity between your mind, body, and spirit. Little things contribute to what makes us complex and different so capitalize and market that quirkiness. Start building yourself in order to present yourself. Too many people believe aesthetic to be just one thing when in reality Aesthetic is a collection. If you begin with the notion that aesthetic is limited then you already have none. Seriously, limitations like that stop you from creating the best version of you. I’ve had plenty of moments where I am out minding my business and someone will approach me with the idea that whatever magical girl thing I’m wearing is a costume.
When the reality is that question should only come up during Halloween, a costume party, or a convention in which cosplay or costumes are welcome. Outside of that, the question is very dismissive and really reads like a negative comment. A style is not always a costume, it’s also an expression, and vision of self.
Second, aesthetic takes patience. Easier said than done. Not everyone has the finances or the time to single handily support a life, wardrobe, room, or even accessory makeover. I’m still trying to hustle for extra money and a job at the same time. It’s never easy to walk in a store and see something you love and leave it because you can’t even rub a penny in your thoughts. The economy is at dinosaur level shit bad, and so is the job market. Finding the time to treat yourself or even the resources can be sparse or impossible to access. This doesn’t change the fact that you can still be aesthetically pleasing in expressing yourself or making a dream into a reality. Start small, take your time. Build your foundation one bit at a time. It’ll take time, months, or years even but eventually, you’ll start to find success and joy in your aesthetic that is very fulfilling.
Aesthetics are very good for building confidence and living your best life. What’s better is when you create your own aesthetic you inspire not only yourself but others as well to live in the manner they find best for them. The soul is the best fuel for aesthetics, the mind the best muse, and the heart of the best creative partner. Take a chance and build your aesthetic, not for others or a fan base, but you. Your aesthetic is yours and yours alone, build it for your peace of mind and visual appreciation. It’s an art form that expresses you in whatever innovative way you find best. Once you have it, it’ll grow and change with you. Trust in your inner muse to uplift and carry you through. Life is too short to live it boring. I look forward to seeing your aesthetic and seeing you flourish into the best version of you that I am blessed to experience.
