Jadedisland 2018 Review

Dear Reader,

The year is ending, and I thought I should ruminate on 2018 a little. For one, I’m proud of how far along Jadedisland has come as a platform. Its became a form of expression and voice that I really enjoy doing. I’m excited to grow alongside my writing in such a visual medium, I feel like Jadedisland the site, and blossoming brand is the marriage between voice and expression that was meant for me.

This year, despite my 7-month trauma of searching for a job, had a lot of good to it that I want to make sure I write down and say. This year was my first time going to Conventions! I always wanted to go, but for some reason, I was shy to participate and obviously felt to poor to explore these venues. Accompanied by dearest friends and loves I attended, Awesome Con, BLERD Con, and Anime USA. Each dynamic and full of exciting experiences I will remember. One thing I can take away from these events is that love and passion for sharing the stories of artists I encounter. While I’m a little slow on the upload, I am still very much in awe of the visual artists I have met at conventions. In fact, I might be a commission addict at this point. Speaking of if you are an artist, I always need visuals for my site!

I traveled just a bit this year! I visited Hawaii, New York, and Virginia quite a bit! I didn’t get to write on my travels, but I hope to one day reflect on some of my experiences in Hawaii and New York City. I visited NYC quite a lot. Actually, I’m surprised I don’t try to link up more! Something to consider with how frequently I visit the city but yet still choose to live in crab central Maryland. One thing about traveling in the states is I get to meet more of my online friends! I had many adventures close to home as well. I participated in Pride for DC and Baltimore. I visited Art Galleries, cultural centers, and museums. Keeping my spirit alive with art and cultural intersections.

My activism further continues, as I regularly give some social review in my podcast, co-hosted with my best friend. I went to the Black Women’s March in D.C. to march alongside those who fought for the voices of sexual assault survivors. A heavy experience but one I needed to remind myself that I’m not alone. I did quite a few exposes. I wrote on the degrading spectacle of Afropunk, Facebook, and interacting in online spaces. Maintaining my stance on voicing for the people and taking a stand against corrupt institutions and fighting for our rights. Activism and I often intertwine with my writing and style, which brings me to my last set of changes In 2018.

Stylistic changes! I met up with the DC Kawaii Style Community and had an absolute blast exploring my style and dedication to a kawaii life. I became a brand ambassador for Adornedbychi and now write occasionally for them. I started exploring cosplay with Snotgirl. Which, still needs work, but I loved it. I worked on character styles and created visuals along side artist Kelsey, to make my inner voices have a look. I put together several dynamic COORDS while exploring J-Fashion and what style means to me. My fashion style is just one part of my voice that gives me the comfort and joy of being who I am in a way that’s beautiful and artistic.

Finally, I wrap up my writing accomplishments for this year. The biggest being my Web Series: The Rest of Forever. I cannot begin to express how joyful I get when I release a chapter and see my story come to life. Each time I work with Middnite Designs I am in awe of her skill in taking my chaotic world and making it melanin rich beauty. On top of my Web Series, I released some one-shot short stories, poetry, and prose. Further exploring my creative writing and narratives. I have been given the opportunity to write for DC Web Fest and helped some bloggers come into their own. My writing voice grows and reaches, and I am proud of how far I’ve come since the first poem I wrote in middle school.

So, with all of that, I have had a colorful year. It’s not been all good, but it was still a year worth remembering positively. Now it’s your turn to tell me about your year. Did you get a chance to follow on your goals or create new ones along the way? I want to know, all about what 2018 left you.

Thank you for being by my side, and I look forward to seeing you in the next year.
